MAYOR QUINN CALLS ON TORRINGTONIANS TO HELP HURRICANE DEVASTATED COMMUNITIES

TORRINGTON - Mayor Owen J. Quinn put out a call to area residents and businesses Thursday to do all they can to help communities along the Gulf Coast destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

In a memo to all City employees Thursday, Mayor Quinn asked municipal workers to donate money, no matter the sum, to the City of Torrington Hurricane Relief Fund.  All donations will be redirected to the American Red Cross.

“I make the same plea to residents and businesses in the City,” Mayor Quinn said Thursday. “Fifty years ago this summer, our City was devastated by a natural disaster and many came to our aid.  Now it’s our turn to help our fellow Americans in need.”

Mayor Quinn authorized a $500 donation to start the fundraising from the City Hall Dress Down Fund, an employee account generated by municipal workers.

“I had several employees suggest using Dress Down Money and I thought it was a great idea,” Mayor Quinn said.

The Torrington Fire Department is also working on sending supplies such as food, water and clothing.  Details for that collection effort will be forthcoming, City officials said.

Following Mayor Quinn’s announcement, Jeff LaLonde, president of the Torrington Savings Bank, said he’d support the local relief effort by matching any bank employee donation to the City relief fund.

Anyone wishing to donate money to the City of Torrington Hurricane Relief Fund may do so by sending checks or money orders care of the Mayor’s Office, 140 Main Street. Torrington CT. 06790.  Cash donations will be accepted at the Mayor’s office during City Hall business hours.
